published a study on ascetic practices of Opus Dei which shows, from Article 83 § 2 Statutes [Codex Iuris Particularis Operis Dei], the abuses practiced by the Directors to the detriment of those who rely on their "spiritual care." This is the text of art. 83, paragraphs 1 and 2:

83 § 1. To win the pitfalls of the threefold concupiscence, mainly of pride, which could be fed from the teaching, social status and professional work, the faithful of the Prelature must practice with courage and tenacity the needs of Christian asceticism. This asceticism is based on continuous and accurate internal and external sense of humility, not only individually but also collectively, the whiteness of the natural simplicity, how to act noble and familiar, constant expression of serene joy, at work, on ' self-denial, sobriety, on the acts sacrificio e sugli esercizi di mortificazione , anche corporale , stabiliti per tutti i giorni e per tutte le settimane, secondo l’età e la condizione di ciascuno. Tutte queste cose devono essere curate come mezzi non solo di purificazione personale, ma anche di vero e solido progresso spirituale, secondo quel ben provato e verificato proverbio : tanto progredirai quanto farai violenza a te stesso . Devono essere curate anche come preparazione necessaria per ogni apostolato da compiere nella società e per il suo perfetto esercizio: I make it ò is lacking in the passion of Christ in my flesh for his body, which is the Church (Col. 1, 24).

§ 2. This spirit of asceticism and penance brings other needs in lives of the faithful of the Prelature, especially the daily examination of conscience, spiritual direction and weekly practice of sacramental confession.
